HSE Coordinator
The HSE Coordinator provides hands-on field support to Civil Operations by promoting safe work practices, identifying hazards, coaching employees and supervisors, and helping ensure compliance with Tindol Construction, client, and applicable HSE requirements. The position is expected to maintain a strong, visible field presence and work collaboratively with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Management, craft employees, subcontractors, and client representatives.
Core Field Responsibilities
- Field Safety Presence: Spend approximately 70% of the workday in the field, actively observing construction activities, engaging crews, recognizing hazards, and coaching safe work behaviors.
- Hazard Identification & Correction: Identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and changing jobsite hazards. Work with Foremen and Superintendents to establish corrective actions and verify deficiencies are addressed.
- Stop Work Authority: Support and reinforce Stop Work Authority when an uncontrolled or serious hazard exists. Immediately communicate significant safety concerns to responsible supervision and HSE/Project Management.
- Civil Construction Safety: Monitor activities such as clearing, grading, earthwork, excavation/trenching, underground utilities, road construction, drainage, pile driving, concrete work, heavy/mobile equipment, spotter operations, lifting/rigging, material handling, traffic control, and equipment-pedestrian interaction.
- JSA/JHA & Pre-Task Planning: Review JSAs/JHAs and pre-task plans to verify work steps, hazards, and controls accurately reflect field conditions. Coach Foremen and crews on improving hazard recognition and revise plans when work conditions or scope change.
- Field Inspections: Conduct and document routine HSE inspections, including a minimum of five documented safety inspections per week per assigned project, and participate in joint inspections with Operations and project leadership.
- Toolbox Talks & Safety Meetings: Provide Foremen with relevant safety topics, participate in toolbox/tailgate meetings, evaluate meeting effectiveness, and verify attendance and documentation.
- Training & Orientation: Conduct, coordinate, and document required employee orientations and applicable training such as Hazard Communication, PPE, heavy equipment awareness, spotter requirements, Stop Work Authority, JSA/JHA, emergency procedures, and client-specific requirements.
- PPE Compliance: Verify required PPE is available, appropriate for the hazard, maintained in suitable condition, and properly used. Maintain and replenish project PPE inventory as needed.
- Behavior-Based Safety: Support Tindol Construction’s BBS program through field observations, positive coaching, near-miss reporting, hazard reporting, and tracking of safe and at-risk behaviors.
- Incident & Near-Miss Support: Promptly report incidents, injuries, property damage, environmental events, and significant near misses. Assist HSE leadership with investigations, documentation, corrective-action tracking, and lessons learned.
- Documentation & Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate safety inspections, JSAs/JHAs, training records, toolbox meetings, BBS observations, near misses, Stop Work events, PPE records, corrective actions, and client-required documentation. Upload required records into the designated company electronic filing system.
- Emergency Preparedness: Understand project emergency procedures, muster locations, emergency contacts, first-aid resources, fire protection equipment, and participate in emergency drills.
- Drug & Alcohol Program Support: Assist with project drug and alcohol program administration, required screening documentation, chain-of-custody records, and confidentiality requirements.
Field Expectations
The HSE Coordinator is expected to be proactive, approachable, professional, and engaged with the workforce. The role should focus on preventing incidents through field interaction and hazard recognition—not simply identifying violations or completing paperwork.
The Coordinator works alongside Operations to help crews plan the work, recognize the hazards, implement effective controls, and perform the work safely.
Minimum Qualification: OSHA 30-Hour Construction – Mandatory
Experience: 2–3 years field HSE/safety experience preferred in heavy civil, utility-scale solar, renewable energy, power generation, or industrial construction.
